About Vinery New York at Sugar Maple
Vinery New York at Sugar Maple is an historical landmark in Poughguag. The land was once owned by J C Penney of mercantile fame, who raised world renowned Black Angus Cattle. In the mid 1980's Howard and Susan Kaskel bought the property, renaming it Sugar Maple Farm, and converting it into a very successful Thoroughbred breeding and racing operation. One of the first horses raised on this land was Eclipse champion and Hall of Famer, Sky Beauty. The 500 acre farm is very picturesque and, in fact, was designed by the same architect who designed the Kentucky farm, so there is a striking similarity between the two facilities.
Vinery identified Sugar Maple as the #1 facility in New York and signed a lease in 2010 with the intent to bring in more stallions and mares to participate in the very lucrative awards program administered by the New York Breeding Fund. The increased purse structure at the New York race tracks has been an incentive for breeders to send mares to New York to foal and breed to New York stallions.
Vinery's New York division is focused on breeding and boarding. At Sugar Maple we are committed to continue the strong tradition of standing a roster of New York's leading sires combined with outstanding young stallion prospects. We feel the 2012 stallion roster offers breeders a fine compliment to both.
POSSE has been the leading sire in New York for three consecutive years (2009-2011). He has accomplished this feat without the benefit of the state breeding incentive bonus. He is the only stallion in New York to sire a Breeders' Cup winner in 2011. This son of Silver Deputy has also sired the multiple champion and Eclipse Award winner, Kodiak Kowboy, who stands at Vinery Kentucky.
BLUEGRASS CAT led the 2011 New York sire lists in two catagories. He was both the Leading Juvenile Sire and the Leading Second Crop Sire. Nationally the #2 Second Crop Sire, he had four juveniles of 2011 weighted on the Experimental Free Handicap and he has eight 2012 3-year-olds nominated to the Triple Crown. By Storm Cat, his dam is a full sister to the dam of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver.
New York G1 winner FROST GIANT sees his first crop come to the races in 2012 and we are looking forward with great anticipation.
Vinery New York has two exciting stallions entering stud in 2012. Five-time graded stakes winner D'FUNNYBONE, a son of Vinery Florida stallion, D'wildcat, offers breeders an outstanding opportunity to breed to a top class racehorse at an extremely attractive stud fee. Joining him in the stallion barn is the Giant's Causeway son, Giant Surprise. Dazzling in his only start, he scored a powerful victroy by more than four lengths, recording a Beyer Speed Figure of 90 in a Saratoga maiden special weight.
